How It’s Made

How Our Custom Furniture Is Made

Every piece at Copperhead Woodworks is built not just to last, but to outlast. Our custom wood furniture is handcrafted in Houston, Texas using solid hardwood and traditional joinery chosen for strength and longevity.

We do not build disposable furniture. We build heirloom-quality pieces designed to serve for generations — furniture that can be maintained and passed down.

Quality begins with careful material selection, sound joinery, and finishes rooted in time-tested woodworking techniques rather than shortcuts.

Solid Hardwood

All furniture is built from solid hardwood. Species are chosen for strength, stability, and their suitability for the role each component plays in the finished piece.

Boards are evaluated for grain orientation, moisture content, and natural movement. In solid hardwood furniture, wood must be allowed to expand and contract as it was meant to — not restrained in ways that lead to failure over time.

Structural components are never built from veneers or engineered panels. Strength begins with real material, properly selected and properly used.

We rely on traditional woodworking joinery because it creates structural connections that do not depend solely on fasteners or adhesives. In custom wood furniture, the joint is the foundation of strength.

The methods we use distribute load evenly, accommodate natural wood movement, and can be repaired if necessary — qualities essential for heirloom furniture built to last decades. Common techniques include:

  • Mortise-and-tenon joinery for frames and primary load-bearing connections

  • Dovetails where resistance to pulling and racking is required

  • Drawbored pegs that mechanically lock tenons in place for added long-term strength

Traditional Joinery

Our finishes are simple and practical. We use natural oil and wax finishes to protect the wood — no plastics, heavy-metal drying agents, or high-VOC coatings. These finishes are:

  • Non-toxic

  • Easily renewed over time

  • Repairable without stripping the entire piece

A finish should protect the wood, not entomb it. Properly maintained, natural finishes allow solid hardwood furniture to age gracefully and be refreshed rather than replaced.

Finished for Longevity

Built To Be Repaired, Not Replaced

Every piece of furniture we make is designed to last — and to be maintained, repaired, and enjoyed for generations. From solid hardwood selection to traditional joinery and natural finishes, our custom wood furniture is crafted so that age and use only add character, never compromise integrity.

By building with care and respect for the materials, we ensure your heirloom furniture can be passed down — not thrown away — becoming a lasting part of your home and family.
